The Mayor's Office of Public Engagement (MOPE) was created in order to increase transparency between constituents and government. Interning at this specific department was an eyeopening experience. I looked forward to each and every day of it. I love the constant surprises of press conferences and events that we have to attend. MOPE turns Mayor Garcetti's visions for Los Angeles into a reality. We reach out to our community to promote engagement, and empower youth to take part in local government.
One of the projects I have been working on is the Mayor's Youth Council. We are proud to say that we are the largest and most successful youth council in the nation. With Los Angeles being the 2nd largest city, we believe that it is important that youth have a say in government. They are the future. For this project, I have created a powerpoint that will be presented to students at an informational session. It is formatted so that anyone- teachers, principals, and counselors can use it to promote our youth council. Another important part of this program is the curriculum. I have taken part in researching the best methods to keep youth engaged in our program.
Another team project I have worked on is managing the social media platforms for our MOPE pages. This includes Facebook and Instagram. As a team, we were tasked to create a sustainability plan for future posts. We came up with different themes for certain days of the week and posted with consistency.
Furthermore, I have also worked in the Welcome Home Project. This is an initiative by the Mayor's Office to inform communities about our affordable sustainable housing approach towards the homeless. We will host a multitude of Welcome Home gatherings all at once on a future date. We want to humanize the homeless and change people's mindsets about building structures in their backyards.
On a side note, one of my colleagues and I helped the legislative coordinator, and it was something new to both of us.
I am so thankful that I had the honor of working with such amazing people. Each and every one of the interns have their own passion, and they inspire me to improve every day. I have learned to step out of my comfort zone, connect with colleagues, and push away my fears. This internship was truly eye-opening. It is one of those opportunities that will shape me and help me become a better person in the near future.

Today was my official first day working as an intern at the LA Mayor's Office of Public Engagement. There were indeed many 'firsts' for me today. This morning I witnessed firsthand the crowded traffic while driving to work. When I arrived at LA City Hall, I was ready to go through security, when the officer pointed to my badge on my shirt. It was then that I remembered I didn't need to go through security. Next, I was walking around, trying to find my office, but I couldn't. I was lost. I had to call my friend, Cindy, whom I had met a day prior, and we were able to find our way in. In the office, I was brainstorming of various ideas that would benefit all Angelenos. I had already submitted a proposal to my supervisor aiming to help the homeless on the previous day. When it came to lunch time, Cindy and I walked all the way to Little Tokyo for lunch. This was my very first time going out to lunch with a colleague. It is a very exciting experience for me, getting to meet people from all walks of life, mostly from great universities and different parts of the country. I remember my supervisor told us during orientation that we are not considered interns, but staff. This means everything we do and speak represents the office and the Mayor. I am very excited for this internship, and hope to learn to engage with many people. I look forward to the opportunities, field trips, and projects that are yet to come."
